The UK operator has brought 4G connectivity to the island of Coll, continuing plans to spread coverage to over 95 per cent of the UK

EE, the UK’s largest network, has announced today it has switched on a new network site on the remote Scottish Island of Coll.

The 195 residents currently living in Coll, can now take advantage of the 4G speeds offered by EE. Vodafone also has a presence on the island, switching on 4G for Coll natives in 2015.

Coll is one of many rural areas where EE has invested in high-speed communications technology. Recently five new 4G sites were switched on in the Orkney Islands as well as sites on the neighbouring Shetland Isles, with more sites planned to connect the whole of Scotland.

The BT owned network currently covers 67% of the UK with its 4G connectivity, with the aim to hit 95% by 2020, offering 4G connection that is according to the network: “50 per cent faster than any other.”

According to EE, with the 4G coverage the Emergency Services Network (ESN) will be enabled and scheduled to go live in late 2017. It will allow emergency services such as the police, fire services and ambulance crews to communicate via 4G.

EE network director Mansoor Hanif said: “We’re delighted to bring EE’s superfast 4G to the businesses and residents of Coll so they can stay connected on the UK’s biggest and most reliable mobile network.”
