Powell quits position as product director after three years to join recently acquired Motorola

Huawei product director James Powell has resigned from the Chinese firm after three years to join Motorola.

Powell, who joined Huawei from Samsung in 2009 where he had held the role of  product manager for two and half years, has been placed on gardening leave following his resignation last Friday (October 31). He will join Motorola in the New Year following the conclusion of his three month notice period.

His job title has yet to be confirmed – but is expected to be similar to that held at Huawei, but will cover both the UK and European markets.

It is the second blow for Huawei in recent months, after UK and Ireland executive vice president Mark Mitchinson quit the firm in September after more than three years.

The firms marketing manager of UK and Ireland Duc Tinh Van Tri is also said to have left in recent weeks to join Vodafone, although this is yet to be confirmed by either party.

Powell, who confirmed the story today, told Mobile News: “Joining Motorola is a fantastic opportunity for me and comes at a very exciting time. I really enjoyed my time at Huawei and worked with some great people. This is a new challenge for me.”

Chinese manufacturer Lenovo completed the £1.82 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google this week. Full story click here
