The final saw both Manchester United and Crystal Palace compete in Wembley Stadium

Saturday’s FA Cup final (May 21) between Manchester United and Crystal Palace saw data usage in a UK stadium exceed one terabyte for the very first time.

This is according to EE, sponsors of Wembley Stadium where the final was held. The final saw data usage exceed nearly twice that of previous FA Cup finals. Usage at the 2014 and 2015 finals clocked 200GB and 520GB respectively. Data for both cup semi-finals last month went over 550GB.

Picture and video posts to social media made up 31 per cent of total traffic inside the 90,000 capacity stadium. Web browsing and video streaming made up the majority of downloads, with video replays and match feeds drawing in the most views.

EE claimed over 12,000 of its customers viewed the BBC’s live coverage of the match through their mobile, with the peak just after United forward Jesse Lingard scored the winner. The majority of streams came from iPhones (64 per cent). The remaining views came from Android (24 per cent) and iPads (seven per cent).
