This is according to the latest numbers from Canalys published today (May 9)
Lack of innovation and expensive pricing has caused the number of PC shipments worldwide to drop 13 per cent year-on-year from 116 million to 101 million in Q1 this year.
This is according to Canalys’ latest figures into the PC market published today (May 9), which includes desktops, notebooks and tablets. This is the sixth successive quarter that PC shipments have fallen.
Apple and Lenovo both led the market in this year’s Q1 with over 14 million shipments each. Both suffered year-on-year declines from 17.2 million and 15.8 million respectively. HP (12 million), Dell (9.1 million) and Samsung (6.8 million) followed.
The US was hit the least by the decline, having seen a 4.8 per cent decrease from 26 million to 24 million. Shipments across EMEA declined from 34 million to 29 million.
Canalys senior analyst Tim Coulling claims the decline was due to expensive pricing and lack of innovation. He said: “The global PC market had a bad start to 2016 and it is difficult to see any bright spots for vendors in the coming quarters.
“Global shipments declines are expected to continue unless vendors bring transformational innovation to the market. Apple and Microsoft are propping up shipments in established markets with their detachables, but price points make them less affordable in low-income countries. The number of people looking to buy their first PC is at an all-time low and 2016 is likely to bring yet more turmoil to global PC vendors.”
