Refurbish and resell division a “priority” for the Group this year with 30,000 handsets received per month

GSUK, part of the Genuine Solutions Group, has won a contract with HTC Europe to provide the manufacturer with a range of device recovery and recycling services.

The company receives (purchases) up to 30,000 handsets per month from a number of mobile retailers and operators, such as Carphone Warehouse, Samsung, LG, EE, Vodafone,Three, Tesco Mobile and Virgin Media.

All handsets are processed and tested for condition and quality at its headquarters in Surbiton, Surrey to establish a resale value. Phones are then either resold into developing markets, dismantled to collect re-sellable parts or recycled for money.

The company is understood to have beaten a number of ‘un-named’ rivals for this ‘first of its kind’ tender by HTC in the UK. Since setting up its handset recovery and disposal division in 2008, GSUK claims to have processed more than 1.2 million handsets. There are an estimated 90 million unused handsets in the UK market, worth an estimated £7 billion.

Expansion Plans

The firm’s associate sales director Gurjit Dhillon (pictured) said GSUK is on the lookout for similar partnerships throughout this year.

“Our strategy for 2015 is to be- come a leader in the device recovery market. Our focus on recovery will be a priority this year and is a large part of the future of GSUK,” said Dhillon. “Ultimately this is where we will see our growth as a business. Most importantly, it will have a large impact on the detrimental effect that waste products have on the environment.”

Genuine Solutions also specialises in mobile accessories distribution, supplying products from the likes of Samsung, LG, Alcatel OneTouch, Jabra, Belkin and Sennheiser to more than 800 customers in 41 countries.
