Meng has been under house-arrest in Canada since December 2018
Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has suffered a setback in her battle to avoid extradition to the United States after a Canadian court ruled the case can proceed.
Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has been under house-arrest in Canada since December 2018.
She allegedly violated US sanctions against Iran.
The US has attempted to extradite Meng to face trial since the her arrest.
Meng has denied any wrongdoing throughout the process.
But yesterday (May 27) Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes ruled in British Columbia’s Supreme Court that the crimes she’s been charged with in the US would also be crimes in Canada.
This means that the case meets the threshold of double criminality.
Meng faces the next phase of proceedings next month, with court scheduled for June 15.
Disappointed
Huawei has said it’s “disappointed” by the ruling in a statement posted by its official Canadian Twitter page.
“Huawei is disappointed in the ruling today by the Supreme Court of British Columbia, we have repeatedly expressed confidence in Ms. Meng’s innocence.
“Huawei continues to stand with Ms. Meng in her pursuit for justice and freedom. We expect that Canada’s judicial system will ultimately prove Ms. Meng’s innocence. Ms. Meng’s lawyers will continue to work tirelessly to see justice is served.”
The current situation is likely to stoke up further tensions between Chinese and Canadian relations.
