While many parts of London still have broadband speeds of around 70Mb, the Hebridean islands of Tiree and Iona are set to receive ultrafast broadband. Openreach engineers are delivering this upgrade as part of the Scottish Government’s R100 fast broadban programme.
The remote islands have long struggled with limited connectivity due to their isolation and dispersed populations. Now, the first households and businesses on Tiree have access to fast broadband, and all eligible premises on Iona are set for an upgrade.
This gigabit broadband will enable seamless video calls, high-speed downloads, uninterrupted streaming, and stronger digital connections—vital for businesses reliant on modern technology.
“This is a fantastic milestone. High-speed internet is essential for both economic growth and everyday life, and I’m delighted that residents and businesses, along with many on Mull, can now experience the benefits,” said Richard Lochhead, Scotland’s Minister for Business.
The upgrade is particularly significant for education and remote working. Chris Russell, a maths and physics teacher at Tiree High School, highlighted the impact: “Seclusion can be an issue both socially and academically. Reliable internet access is a huge benefit. More people will be able to move here and work remotely, which could encourage younger generations to return and help sustain the island community.”
Robert Thorburn, Openreach’s Partnership Director for Scotland, added: “Rolling out full fibre broadband to Scotland’s island communities is no small feat. A great deal of work goes into protecting the environment and ensuring we leave these islands exactly as we find them. This upgrade will be a real game-changer for the people of Iona and Tiree.”
