From tomorrow (September 27) O2’s 4G network will be accessible to 9.5 million people – as roll out reaches eight cities in the past month
O2 is to increase the number of cities covered by its 4G network to eight in the past month- by adding five more locations tomorrow.
In addition to London, Leeds and Bradford – which all went live from launch (August 29), O2 customers in Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield will have access to its 4G network.
O2 said its network will cover more than 9.5 million people from tomorrow. A further five cities (Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle) are scheduled to go live before the end of the year.
O2 is aiming to increase the number of people that can access its 4G network by two million every month until 2015 – achieving 98 per cent indoor and outdoor coverage in the UK. The operator says it is investing around £1.5 million on upgrading its network every day.
O2 CEO Ronan Dunne said: “Digital connectivity will be made ubiquitous by 4G and become the oxygen of modern life. It is our intention to use 4G to inspire the nation through the possibilities of technology, encouraging people to live more, do more and be more with O2.
“The full potential of 4G is as yet unexplored, but what we can be sure of is that it will allow for a whole new world of opportunity that people are now ready for. Over half of our customers say they use more data than two years ago, as can be seen by the 79 per cent increase in Coventry alone over the last 12 months.
“Given this trend, there is no doubt that 4G will transform our lives, be it as consumers, in business or through public sector services.”
