Vodafone has landed a four-year contract with the networks division of ScottishPower to modernise and future-proof the critical communications infrastructure that underpins Scotland’s electricity grid.
The telecoms giant will overhaul the operational communications used to manage SP Energy Networks’ infrastructure, which includes 19,500 substations, 23,000km of overhead lines, and 41,000km of underground cables—serving two million homes and businesses.
Under the contract, Vodafone will be responsible for delivering capital projects, managing network operations, and providing fixed, mobile, and satellite connectivity. The work aims to improve network resilience and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.

Paul Garston, Head of Smart Grid Operations at SP Energy Networks, said:
“It’s great to welcome Vodafone on board to maintain and modernise our operational telecom infrastructure and ensure it continues to deliver for our customers and communities.”
Tom Stockwell, Head of Key Accounts at Vodafone UK, added: “This partnership isn’t just about future-proofing SPEN’s networks—it’s about using connectivity to unlock new capabilities that benefit consumers, businesses, and the environment.”
