Smartphone passes landmark nine years after smartphone was first made available
Apple sold its billionth iPhone last week – just over nine years after the device first went on sale.
The manufacturer’s CEO Tim Cook made the announcement at an employee meeting at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.
“iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day.
“Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”
Milestones
The iPhone was first unveiled by Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs (pictured main) at the Macworld Convention in San Francisco on January 9, 2007.
It then went on sale in the US on June 29, 2007 and since then, 12 iPhone models have gone on sale throughout the world.
Apple passed one billion iOS devices sold in January 2015 and exactly a year later announced it had one billion total active devices across iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod, Apple TV and Apple Watch.
