Nokia CEO Stephen Elop revealed Telefonica will offer “certain European markets” a tweaked version of the Lumia 1020 later this year

Telefonica has signed a partnership with Nokia which will see it bring a unique version of the Nokia Lumia 1020 to a selection of its European markets.

The Lumia 1020, unveiled today (July 11) in New York, is a smarpthone with a 41 million megapixel camera which Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said will “define the future of smartphone photography”.

Speaking at the launch event, Elop said the device will be sold by US operator AT&T first from July 26 (preorders from July 16), for $299.99.

Elop said the Lumia 1020 would also go on sale this quarter in China and “key” EU markets – although he did not say any more on when the UK would get the handset. Nokia told Mobile News the handset is coming to the UK “later this year”.

Telefonica, which operators under the brand name O2 in the UK, will get an exclusive version of the device which it will sell in “certain” European markets, Elop said.

The operator will make further announcements on its Lumia 1020 plans, Elop said.

As well as O2, Phones 4U and Three have also confirmed they will offer the Lumia 1020.

The device will be available in yellow, white and black.
