Three achieves 70% network energy saving with latest Ericsson radio system

Three UK has refreshed part of its network with the latest Ericsson radio equipment that uses machine learning and AI to switch off during low traffic periods and instantly turn back on again

As part of an ongoing network modernisation initiative over the last 18 months, Three UK has worked with Ericsson on improving network energy performance with energy efficient radios and the use of AI and data analytics.

Late last year Three UK deployed Ericsson’ dual-band Radio 4490 (above), which consumes less power and is 25 per cent lighter than previous models which speeds up site upgrades.

Machine learning, passive cooling and power-saving features means the new generation of radio works autonomously across 4G and 5G networks to switch off inactive radio components and switch on again in microseconds for the next service request.

Three calculates the Ericsson equioment increase energy efficiency up to 70 per.

The system won Ericsson Red Dot Product Design Award 2023 for its dual-band Radio 4490 and ultra-lightweight Massive MIMO Radio AIR 3268 from the  Ericsson Radio System portfolio.

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the biggest design competitions in the world, with around 20,000 entries per year. The jury, comprising international experts, evaluates products based on various criteria, constantly adapting to new technical, social, economic, and ecological requirements.
