Ericsson has deployed Private 5G networks to deliver broadcast-quality video streaming from racing craft at the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth next week.
The setup covers the Portsmouth Race Stadium, event operations centers, and a technical centre located about 18 miles from the venue.
12 F50 catamarans (beow) are equipped with Ericsson Cradlepoint edge routers connected to the Private 5G network and a dedicated network slice on BT’s public 5G standalone network.
These systems handle over 53 billion data points per race day, transmitting IoT data, video streams, and communications in real time. This infrastructure supports live camera feeds for race adjudication and provides teams with performance and location data.
Ericsson and BT have deployed high-frequency radios to deliver multiple gigabit capacity for augmented reality video experiences in the fan zone. BT has also implemented two dedicated 5G network slices prioritizing bandwidth for event merchandising, broadcasting cameras, boat connectivity, and media uploads.
