Manchester Airport gets 4G indoor upgrade installed by BT Group and WIG

BT Group and Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) have deployed a new 4G indoor mobile network system across all three terminals at Manchester Airport.

The upgrade uses a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to improve wireless coverage and capacity within the airport buildings and designed to deal with complex layouts and high passenger volumes.

Manchester Airport handles millions of passengers each summer, with 6.56 million travellers recorded in July and August last year. The new indoor network aims to provide reliable connectivity throughout public areas, supporting services such as mobile payments, app usage, and digital boarding passes.

The system is designed to maintain consistent mobile performance even during peak periods, overcoming issues like thick walls and multi-level terminal structures that can limit outdoor cellular signals indoors.

This installation follows a similar upgrade at London Stansted Airport extending indoor mobile coverage to the UK’s fourth busiest airport.

The rollout is part of BT’s broader effort to improve indoor mobile network reliability in high-traffic, complex environments such as airports, stadiums, shopping centres, and transport hubs.
